October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Friday 12th of October 2007 01:40:53 PMI am very luck to work at a business that is very diverse. We have meeting, gatherings and discussions on just about every topic imaginable. The most recent topic is Domestic Violence. I myself, have been in a past relationship w/violence; so this comes from my heart. It is an article that was passed out at my workplace.
Domestic Violence encompasses a wide range of acts committed by one partner against another in an intimate relationship. This may occur in a variety of relationships; married, separated, divorced, dating, heterosexual, gay or lesbian.
Domestic Violence is a pattern of behaviors, some causing physical injury, others not, some criminal, others not, but all are psychologically damaging. Frequently, Domestic Violence includes threats of violence, threats of suicide, or threats to take children from the abused person. It may also include breaking objects, hurting pets, yelling, driving recklessly to endange or scare the abused person, isolating family members from others and controlling resources like money, vehicles, credit and time.
The Goal of the abusive person is to establish and maintain control over his or her partner, without intervention, domestic violence may become lethal.
There is NO excuse for Domestic Violence.

Thanks for bringing up the issue of domestic violence, Chris! So many people do not understand this terrible abuse. I teach women’s studies at a local university and this is one issue I make sure students come away from the course completely understanding! It’s all about POWER! A huge issue of concern to women. Though some males are victims at times, the overwhelming population of victims of domestic violence are females. We need to spread the word…learn to recognize the facts & understand you do not have to stay in an abusive relationship!

A big Thank You for teaching women’s studies and briging up this issue. People do not realize just how many women, and yes men, are in this type of relationship and they just refuse to believe or acknowledge it, thinking it will always get better. It helps to talk to friends, family, strangers. So if there is anyone out there that needs to talk, talk to me or just talk to someone on the outside. XO
